University City’s sixth annual Movies in the Parks series opens Friday, June 10 in Heman Park, with the inspirational boxing story “Creed.” It will be followed by two more films hosted in Millar Park, “Furious 7” and “Inside Out.” The 2016 selection was made by a committee of volunteer residents, based on a list made-up of suggestions from last year’s “Viewers’ Choice” poll, as well as requests from local youth and the University City School District.
Film committee chair Wilmetta Toliver-Diallo said of the series: “One of our priorities was to select films that appealed to a broad audience and offer local youth, primarily tweens and teens, with safe alternative entertainment and cultural programming that’s constructive and a more positive way to spend time than hanging out.”
Like the first five years, the 2016 Movies in the Parks series was organized by a volunteer group of residents which is searching for sponsors for the film series. The City of University City is supportive of their efforts but the screenings are made possible through sponsorship donations from local businesses and residents – with levels of support ranging from $75 – $250 in exchange for advertising at the events.
To make a donation, sponsor a film or host event concessions for your school at one of the 2016 Movies in the Parks events — or if you would like to volunteer to serve on the committee itself, contact the movies committee at firstname.lastname@example.org.
